The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Agricultural Development initiative engaged the team from 2010-2011 to perform a segmentation analysis to support its strategy update. The objectives of the segmentation analysis included:

  • Determining the targeting strategy and identifying specific populations with which Agricultural Development should work.
  • Providing a framework for prioritizing how Agricultural Development uses its resources to work with specific populations and invest in specific interventions.
  • Improving and extending Agricultural Development’s ability to appropriately reach and impact different population segments.
  • Developing a better understanding of the important differences between population segments.

3SI mapped poverty-reduction opportunities for approximately 340 million rural farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. The mapping included targeted productivity improvements across staple crops, high-value crops, and livestock. 3SI also helped identify priority investment locations, such as areas with high population density.
